This study evaluates the effectiveness of using Computer-mediated communication (CMC) and Web-based instruction (WBI) in a problem-based learning (PBL) environment for U.S. history instruction. It shows how the use of a “virtual office space” for thematic instruction, focused on the Butterfield Overland Stage history in the El Paso region, affected learning of secondary students in a “normal” classroom environment, led by a classroom teacher who assumed an Action Researcher stance. Grounded in constructivist and social-constructivist theory and using a case-history, ethnographic approach, the study reports on the kinds of interactions that were present between teaching tools and pedagogy, the kinds of learning evident in the project, how students used CMC and WBI for conversations and collaboration in groups as a community of learners, and students' attitudes toward using a virtual office space as part of a project-based learning of history.
