The purpose of this study was to analyze and reflect on the use of technology as part of the Grade 4/5 Social Studies curriculum in my own practice, with the goal of moving myself to a higher level of technology implementation. I wanted to see what I could learn about my own practice and about how children respond to instruction using web-based and other computer activities.

I developed an action research plan to explore the integration of technology into the Social Studies curriculum with my class of Grade 4/5 students. My specific plans included the use of <italic>HyperStudio</italic> (a multi-media program), a Scavenger Hunt or WebQuest, e-mail, the <italic>Canadian Encyclopedia </italic> CD-ROM, and the Internet. Technology-based projects were integrated into Unit 1 (Identity) and Unit 3 (Inter-dependence) of the Saskatchewan Social Studies curriculum.

The nature of my study was largely reflective. I played the major role in the study as the principle observer of my own practice. Data were collected in the form of my own reflective journal, student journal entries, and a taped interview with a focus group of students. The study continued over the entire course of the 1999–2000 school year. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
