Over the past several decades there has been a mounting understanding that urban landscapes adhere to the same ecological processes of the biophysical world as non-urban landscapes. Landscape architects are significantly responsible for the design of outdoor spaces, yet ecological principles are rarely addressed when they design for the city. The purpose of this research is to identify and describe an appropriate site design process that facilitates the successful integration of ecological functions into urban landscapes.

This research undertakes a content analysis of key literature to define (a) key urban ecological principles, and (b) a variety of landscape design processes. The design processes are compared to the principles in a matrix analysis in order to evaluate whether the performance requirements are addressed, and at what stage in each process. The development of an urban ecological landscape site design process is developed from the strengths of existing design processes in addressing urban ecological principles, in addition to a gap analysis of their weaknesses. The final design process views a site as a layering of systems, which requires a paradigm shift on the part of designers from the outset of the process.
