Thesis (M.E.S.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2001.
This thesis studies the relationship between school ground naturalization (SGN) and children's environmental disposition in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This important theme is examined to explore the reconnection to nature opportunities that SGN holds for school age children. Twenty-five schools in the Halifax, Nova Scotia area, in conjunction with the Evergreen Foundation, are part of the Model Schools Program as part of a nation-wide move towards SGN.

It is argued that SGN plays an essential role in education and reconnecting children to nature, in turn forming positive and healthy attitudes towards nature. As society moves further and further from rural environments, towards urban centers, the relationship that exists between children and the natural environment deteriorates. The move towards reconnecting with nature must occur.

This study examines the nature of the relationship between grades four and five children's participation in an SGN project and their environmental dispositions. The study was designed as a quasi-analytical experiment where an SGN and non-SGN school were examined and compared. There were two questionnaires used: the Children's Environmental Response Inventory (CERI) to measure environmental disposition; and, a supplemental survey designed by the researcher to examine background information. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
