The literature review looked at case studies of changing and divided neighborhoods, coping with demographic neighborhood transitions, as well as studies of relationships of Blacks with other minorities.

A number of urban spaces that make up the United States' inner core have, undergone rapid demographic and socio-political changes. One of the most interesting and less studied of these changes is the transformation in everyday life patterns that is brought about when one ethno-racial minority appears to “flood” the urban space of another ethno-racial minority.

The following questions guided the inquiry: (1) What factors have and continue to encourage and facilitate the departure of Black residents from Pacoima? (2) What behavioral and emotional adjustments have been made by Black residents who have chosen to stay in this changing community? (3) What are the relationships of older Black residents (people who have lived in Pacoima for twenty years or more) with their new Latino/Hispanic, neighbors?

Fourteen individual narratives were collected from African American residents until a saturation point was reached. The narratives were then analyzed thematically. The study apprehended the perspectives of older Black residents in a demographically changing city. The following themes described those perspectives: (1) Blacks have left Pacoima due to industry closures. (2) They have also left for nicer, affordable housing in outlining areas. (3) Blacks perceived that the neighborhood has changed dramatically in physical appearance and in the way neighbors interact. (4) Blacks overall do not have a problem with their Latino/Hispanic neighbors but they have little interaction with them due to language and cultural barriers.
