This study investigates the experiences of job loss and retraining among women in Southwest Virginia who have experienced layoff from the apparel industry. Interviews with six women who were graduates or were near completion of a community college retraining program provide a description of the experiences of women adult learners from a rural area who lose jobs then find new careers. Participants represent a span of age ranges and varying career choices. The study reports the effects of job loss and the effects of retraining in light of the developmental stages depicted by Carol Gillian and the case studies of Robert and Jane Hallowell Coles.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The findings indicate that those who experience job loss progress through the stages of grief. Dislocated workers also experience loss of self-esteem and feelings of loneliness. Many fear retraining, and the participants report that many laid off workers do not enroll in retraining because of fear. The study finds that plant closing procedures and the manner in which notification of NAFTA-TAA benefits are explained are not always uniform, leaving many laid off workers unaware of the benefits that are available. Those who retrain show growth in self-esteem and pride in their accomplishments. Having to “downgrade” to earn a certificate requiring a shorter period of study rather than the degree they had hoped to earn is a significant problem. Participants also report that many cannot participate in retraining because they must take any job that will provide health care for the family.

The implications of the study are that policy makers should examine ways of providing for extended benefits. Often students need basic skills work, and some program cohorts do not begin until the fall term. Community college educators need to examine ways to help ease the transition, alleviate fears, and reach those who fear coming. Programs that provide service learning opportunities, effective orientation procedures, and cultural studies can help them adjust to the change. Programs need to reflect current theory of adult learning to effectively meet the needs of the returning adult so that they might re-enter the workforce.
