Pediatric obesity represents a significant health problem in the United States, affecting an ever-increasing percentage of the population. Changes in physical activity behaviors and perception of exercise exertion were determined to be modifiable factors that could possibly result in increased energy expenditure. Incorporation of these variables into a self-regulatory program was proposed for use in a physical education curriculum at a local elementary school. The purpose of this research was to determine if heart rate monitors could enable children to self-regulate their physical activity level in order to maintain healthy physically active lifestyles.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Findings indicated that students were able to increase time spent in their target heart rate zone to a statistically significant degree as a result of the intervention. Statistically significant changes were also found in the perceived exercise exertion scores; however, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the possibility of confounding factors. Further research is recommended to determine if these findings can be generalized beyond this sample population.
