This descriptive study investigated the needs of non-traditional students during their first year at a mid-Atlantic community college, the degree to which these needs were being met, advisors' perceptions of these needs, and the degree to which they were being addressed by the present advising function. Specifically, four issues were focused on: (1) the needs of non-traditional male and female students during their first year and their perceptions of how well these needs were met; (2) advisors' perceptions of the needs of non-traditional male and female students' needs and how well they were meeting these needs; (3) congruence between students and advisors perceptions regarding students needs; and (4) the relationship between persistence and student advising.

The design of the study was a treatment/comparison group design wherein qualitative and quantitative data collection methods were used. The nature and intent of this study can be described as descriptive. This multi-method approach permitted the researcher to become directly involved in the process of learning first hand the self-reported experiences and perceptions of students and advisors. Information that was acquired from these sources related to the quantity and quality of academic advising sessions and the association of these sessions with the success of first year students. Data acquired from the student and advisor questionnaire and the focus groups were used to learn if the perception of student needs among advisors and the stated needs of students were the same and if there were any differences between male and female participants.

Average spring GPAs for both gender categories in the treatment group were higher than in the comparison group. However, there were neither significant main effects nor significant interactions for gender and group. Regardless of the advising factor, males earned higher average spring GPAs than females.
