520 $a Chien-Shiung Wu was a Chinese-born woman physicist. She was elected the first female president of the American Physical Society in 1975. Her work, especially her contribution to the discovery of parity nonconservation in the weak interactions, has made people refer to her as “another Marie Curie.”
520 $a Wu's life has a special attraction and significance: She was a nuclear physicist who worked in one of the most exciting fields in the development of modern physics. She was born in China and grew up in a society with an ancient cultural tradition, then came to the U.S., a modern Western society, and made her career there. And she was a woman who worked in a profession that was, and still is, almost exclusively the domain of men.
520 $a My dissertation, an intellectual biography of Wu, hence explores Wu's life from three perspectives: (a) her Chinese cultural background; (b) the history of physics during her career development; and (c) her life as a woman in a male-dominated field. I attempt not only to narrate the story of a famous physicist, but, more importantly, to explore and understand the intellectual development of a scientist whose life crossed the boundaries of different cultures and societies, and to assess the significance of that individual's life in the history of science. It is thus essential for me to establish the cultural context, the historical background, the social environment and the academic surroundings in all the stages of Wu's life.
520 $a The Cobalt-60 parity experiment, which Wu and her collaborators carried out between 1956 and 1957, is considered one of the “land-mark” experiments of twentieth century physics. The high point of the biography is the three chapters devoted to this episode which constituted the zenith in Wu's career and a turning point in her life.
