The author presents a new game-theoretic interpretation of the rise of Christianity and the lessons that contemporary social scientists, game theorists, and religious leaders ought to draw from it. The cumulative rationality of the Christian tradition is explored and defended using both the iterated prisoner's dilemma model developed by Robert Axelrod, and the concept of inferior prudence, as articulated by Adam Smith. The author argues that the unique character of Christian moral teaching provided it with a distinct prudential advantage over its early competitors, an advantage still evident in the disposition of its contemporary followers. The author concludes that this prudential advantage has been overlooked by the social sciences and abandoned by many major religious denominations.
