Thesis (Ph.D.)--Dallas Theological Seminary, 2002.
<?Pub Inc> This study arose from the basic question: is there a syntactical principle which helps to determine how <math> <f> <g>p</g><a><ac><g>a</g></ac><ac>&d4;</ac></a><g>v</g></f> </math> and <math> <f> `<hsp sp="-0.167"><hsp sp="-0.167"><a><ac><g>a</g></ac><ac>&d12;</ac></a> <g>p</g><g>a</g><g>v</g></f> </math> are used in the NT? The answer is that there are many potentially competing syntactical principles that help determine meaning. But syntax is not the only determining factor; there are also multiple semantic properties which help determine meaning.

This dissertation is composed of five chapters. Chapter 1 explores the relevant secondary literature on the use of <math> <f> <g>p</g><a><ac><g>a</g></ac><ac>&d4;</ac></a><g>v</g></f> </math> with attention to any syntactical or semantic principles formulated therein, focusing mainly on NT usage. There is very little literature devoted entirely to the subject of <math> <f> <g>p</g><a><ac><g>a</g></ac><ac>&d4;</ac></a><g>v</g></f> </math>, and those treatments are limited (usually to the Pauline Epistles). Chapter 2 establishes the method of the study, contributing the semantic properties of the count/mass distinction and the definiteness-referentiality properties as aids for interpretation beyond mere syntax. Chapter 3 presents the results of syntactical categorization, discusses textual variations, and presents the normal semantic situations in which <math> <f> <g>p</g><a><ac><g>a</g></ac><ac>&d4;</ac></a><g>v</g></f> </math> appears. Chapter 4 applies the principles and statistics developed in the other chapters to several exegetically and theologically debated passages in the NT. Chapter 5 summarizes the findings of the study and gives a suggested method for handling <math> <f> <g>p</g><a><ac><g>a</g></ac><ac>&d4;</ac></a><g>v</g></f> </math> constructions in the NT.
