Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2002.
4QInstruction is the largest wisdom text of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Formally published in 1999, it has only begun to be studied. It is considered a sapiential text because of the extent to which it draws on traditional wisdom. It also, however, has themes that are compatible with apocalyptic literature. While traditional wisdom, represented primarily by the Book of Proverbs, offers practical advice about spheres of ordinary life, such as family and marriage, apocalypticism is generally preoccupied with the revelation of higher wisdom, showing little interest in daily affairs. The central concern of this dissertation is how 4QInstruction should be seen in relation to these two traditions. 4QInstruction is a pedagogical composition devoted to the ethical development of its intended addressees. It accomplishes this by giving instruction in the tradition of biblical wisdom on practical topics such as debts and family. It also does this by disclosing divine mysteries. For example, it provides knowledge about the extent of God's dominion over the created order, his predetermination of the flow of events, and the imminence of his judgment. These truths reflect the influence of the apocalyptic tradition. The authors of 4QInstruction wanted their addressees to live in light of the mysteries that had been revealed to them. This revealed knowledge was intended to encourage them to live lives characterized by humility and reverence. 4QInstruction's apocalypticism and practical wisdom should not be separated from one another, as some have argued. 4QInstruction's apocalyptic worldview provided the broader theological context in which the addressee's ordinary life was understood.
