The purpose of this study was to provide a history of campus ministries at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) from 1874 through 1995. The study was limited to active member groups of the Campus Ministries association, and incorporated narratives of the organizations as well as a history of the Campus Ministries association.

520 $a The purpose of this study was to provide a history of campus ministries at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) from 1874 through 1995. The study was limited to active member groups of the Campus Ministries association, and incorporated narratives of the organizations as well as a history of the Campus Ministries association.
520 $a The historical method was employed. In addition to a description of the events, persons, goals, programs, and philosophies relevant to the campus ministries, the author searched for common themes that were related to the establishment and continuation of these groups. A brief history of campus ministry in the United States was presented in Chapter II to give a broader historical context for the study.
520 $a The following research questions were used in this investigation: (1) What were the goals and accomplishments, cooperative efforts, and failures for each campus ministry as well as the Campus Ministries association at SIUC? (2) What were the common themes that would help to explain the establishment and development of campus ministries at SIUC?
520 $a Based on this historical review of the founding and development of the campus ministries at SIUC, the following general conclusions are presented. (1) Success of a campus ministry is directly related to a clear mission statement and faithfulness to that mission. (2) Campus ministries survive and flourish to the degree that they recognize their dependence upon God and seek His blessing through prayer. (3) Student commitment and involvement is essential to the continuation as well as the achievement of the objectives of campus ministries. (4) The quality and continuation of a campus ministry is contingent on an adviser or director who is able to facilitate activities and guide student leaders in their development. (5) Increased development of campus ministries is dependent on adequate financial resources, and positive relations with the SIUC administration and faculty. (6) Campus ministries positively impacted SIUC.
