In this dissertation, I examine the influence of Christian ideals on the fiction of the eighteenth century by Defoe and Fielding. Many fictional works in the eighteenth century make claims about improving the "virtue" of their readers. My method combines the reader-response criticism, especially that of Stanley Fish and Wolfgang Iser, and formalist criticism; but I do pay attention to recent advances in historiography and particularly feminist concerns. Daniel Defoe's last fictional text, Roxana, as well as Henry Fielding's last fictional work, Amelia, provide the center of this study. Both are polemical in nature, but show the ironies and inconsistencies that can plague argumentative forms. Both texts also conclude rather ambiguously, which suggests that tutoring virtue through fiction is not simple didacticism and is much more complex.

My analysis of these works and their contexts suggests that both authors were struggling with the application of their faith in eighteenth-century England. Reading these texts with Reformation and Protestant theology in mind demonstrates that even those who believe in Christianity still cannot easily or dogmatically resolve the conflicts inherent in the social mores of the era. Both texts raise more questions than provide answers, and thus are far more problematic than their moments of "didacticism" may suggest. This is particularly true when the prefaces and dedications are also taken into account.
