520 $a The philosophy of John Locke is reflected in Daniel Defoe's <italic> The Family Instructor</italic>, a “proto-novel” or narrative work of practical theology, Laurence Sterne's <italic>Tristram Shandy</italic>, a satirical “anti-novel,” and Lord Chesterfield's <italic>Letters </italic> to his son, which often employ exemplary narrative. In addition to developing (or satirizing) styles of didactic and episodic narrative, these works also contain differing academic, moral, and ethical systems of direct instruction for their diverse reading audiences.
520 $a The dissertation explores a common philosophical basis in works of eighteenth-century literature which depict and/or actually perform the practice of domestic or non-institutional schooling. The problematic nature of paternal authority as instructional authority is explored. Analysis of social, psychological, and semiotic contexts synthesizes new perspectives concerning pedagogical issues of textual and instructional authority.
