Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) was used to measure the mobility of water in tuff at two saturations, 5% and 10% by weight. The tuff sample is from a surface outcrop of the Calico Hills formation, which lies below the proposed location for a high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, NV. The sample is a powdered piece of devitrified tuff composed mainly of zeolites and having clinoptilolite (approximately 70%), mordenite, and opal-CT as major constituents. QENS measurements were made at five temperatures in the range 200 K to 400 K. Rotational motion of adsorbed water is easily observed at both saturations and translational motion is observed at higher temperatures for the 10% saturation sample. The tuff data were analyzed to determine the rotational diffusion rate and the translational diffusion coefficient. The results are comparable to similar earlier studies and show an increase in water movement with both temperature and saturation.
