Thesis (M.S.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 1997.
The thesis presents the formulation and the application of a continuum-based finite-layer approach to evaluate pavement response under actual traffic loading. The model incorporates important pavement response factors such as the dynamic tire-pavement load variations and corresponding complex interface stress distributions (normal and shear), vehicle speed, and visco-elastic material characterization. Two important engineering applications for which pavement responses evaluated by the proposed approach are deemed important have been highlighted and discussed. The applications considered are pavement performance (or distress) and moving traffic-induced vibrations. A study of these engineering applications require pavement strain and particle velocity responses as critical input.

Results of a parametric study in which two typical thin and thick pavement sections were subjected to moving traffic loading at different speeds are presented and critically reviewed. As an important application of the proposed method, pavement responses generated by wide-base and dual tires have been presented under a variety of conditions. This enables direct comparison of responses from both type of tires. The comparison of responses from wide-base tires along with the traditionally used dual tires is believed very important because of the recent consideration of wide-base tires to replace the dual tires. The study reveals that contradictory to the past studies, the impact of tire-pavement interface shear stress on tensile strain at the bottom of asphalt pavement (AC) is insignificant.
