<italic>Purpose of the study</italic>. Prior research has indicated that never-married persons report lower self-esteem than married persons. Research also infers that social support from family and friends not only helps individuals adjust to a single lifestyle, but that it contributes to this adjustment by strengthening and promoting positive self-esteem. Though a pattern of social support has been noted, the degree and significance of the relationship between social support and self-esteem was not known. This study examined the extent to which age, gender, marital status, and social support predicted self-esteem.

520 $a <italic>Procedure</italic>. A total of 177 participants from Sunday School classes at a large metropolitan church completed a demographic questionnaire, Perceived Social Support Scale-Family, Perceived Social Support Scale-Friends, and Index of Self-Esteem. Regression statistics were utilized to examine the prediction of age, gender, marital status, and perceived social support on self-esteem. The predictor variables were entered individually and in hierarchical steps to find the best combination of predictors.
520 $a <italic>Findings</italic>. Findings of this study indicated that perceived social support of both friends and family, and gender were significant predictors of self-esteem, but that age and marital status were not. The best combination of predictor variables that yielded the greatest variance of self-esteem were the social support scales and gender. Not only were age and marital status not significant, but indicated weak to no relationship with self-esteem.
520 $a <italic>Conclusions</italic>. The results of this study differ from existing literature and may indicate that the role of never-married persons continues to change and become more socially acceptable, which in turn, is reflected in higher self-esteem scores. It may also reflect a population that has a greater sense of identity or adhere to different values and beliefs. Future studies may want to qualitatively measure a never-married persons experience and look at the role of key characteristics important to persons with socially significant relationships outside of marriage.
