Herman Preusse, trained in both architecture and engineering arrived in America during the summer of 1870 and eventually made his way to what was then known as Spokane Falls, Washington Territory in 1882—little more than a frontier town. Throughout his architectural career in Spokane, the architect's work impacted not only the skyline of Spokane but the construct of eastern Washington as well. This thesis covers his life, the environment within which he worked, definitive examples of his commercial and public designs, and an appendix containing his architectural endeavors in and around eastern Washington.
