Agricultural activity directly impacts the chemistry of our environment in several major ways, such as contamination from pesticide and fertilizer applications. For several years, one of the most publicized classes of environmental pollutants has been pesticides. Carbamates represent a major class of synthetic organic pesticides, and other commonly used pesticides include among others, chlorinated hydrocarbons, organnophosphates and chlorophenoxy acids and many more others. Carbamate insecticides are widely used on a variety of agricultural commodities. Published separation and quantitation methods of carbamates have involved high performance liquid chromatography (with post column derivatization), supercritical fluid chromatography, thermospray mass spectrometry and analysis as GC-suitable derivatives.

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, GC/MS, analysis of carbamates has an inherent disadvantage due to the fact these compounds are thermally labile. In this project, a novel sample injection technique which makes use of a septum-equipped temperature programmable injector (SPI) has been used to address the thermally labile nature of these compounds. The following carbamates were used to develop a GCI/MS/MS analysis method: carbaryl, carbofuran, 3-hydroxycarbofuran, propoxur, bendiocarb and methiocarb.

This method was successfully compared to high performance liquid chromatography (with post-column derivatization using fluorescence detection), an established carbamate analysis method. The results of this comparison proved the utility of the GC method. The GC method would be a preferred option for confirmatory analysis. In this project, a robust GCI/MS/MS method was developed and used to confirm interlaboratory HPLC results on analysis of real world carbamate samples.
