Much as people routinely report and re-voice others' words in talk, people also routinely re-perform others' gestures and actions, re-purpose objects, re-present ideas in different media (as when a story is read aloud or enacted in play), and re-make both their environments and themselves along the way. Such reworking of discourse routinely involves multiple kinds of signs (talk, gesture, writing, design of spaces, making of objects), yet researchers have been slow to take up semiotics (ormultimodality) as a question of anything more than interesting objects(like a computer screen with words, images, and sounds). With a rich blend of sociocultural theories and methods, the multidisciplinary researchers in this volume (representing writing studies, communication disorders, communication studies, applied linguistics, anthropology and education) argue for exploring semiotic remediation as a question of discourse practice.
