Although Moliere was influenced by classical comedy, Spanish comedy and above all commedia dell'arte, he created one of their kind servants who combined buffoonery and popular wisdom. He gave a new life to the maidservant, who became a crucial character, who acts towards the well-being of her masters' family and points out the many imperfections of 17th century society. Moliere has in his turn influenced many authors, whose works reflect the changes occuring in their time, especially through the use of servants who criticize social order.
