Although the originally French speaking Franco-American communities of Southbridge, Massachusetts and Woonsocket, Rhode Island have much in common historically, language shift toward English has advanced to differing degrees in the two locations. In this dissertation, I explore morphosyntactic variation and the advance of language shift in the two locations using historical documentation, U.S. census figures and sociolinguistic interviews conducted with sixty-nine informants.

520 $a After comparing and contrasting the sociolinguistic profiles of the two communities, I describe some of the linguistic consequences of the shift from French to English in these traditional Franco-American centers through a quantitative variationist analysis of two morphosyntactic variables. These are auxiliary variation in the passe compose and variation between use of the synthetic and analytic futures. Findings from Southbridge and Woonsocket provide new insight for understanding linguistic change during situations of language decline.
520 $a While language shift is advancing in both locations, the shift from French to English is rapidly nearing completion in Southbridge. In the course of only one human lifetime, French has not only lost its majority status, but is quickly fading to become a memory in the town.
520 $a Southbridge and Woonsocket stand out as a unique case of language shift. Despite the differing degrees to which the shift from French to English has advanced in the two communities, speech norms are remarkably similar in the two locations today. While certain aspects of grammar (e.g. expressions of futurity) are certainly changing, this is also the case in other varieties and in settings where French is the majority language. Moreover, variation among forms representing an overtly prescribed point of grammar (e.g. auxiliary choice in the passe compose) bears all of the social meaning found in non-obsolescent speech varieties. Despite the sociolinguistic situation of language shift, the French language shows a degree of grammatical conservatism in both Southbridge and Woonsocket which may render this variety remarkably resistant to those qualitative changes which would otherwise add to the stigma of Franco-American French.
