This investigation analyzes the Judeo-Spanish speech of two Sephardic Philadelphia families representing first and second generation speakers. The five informants in this study were interviewed two times approximately one year apart for one and a half hours at each session. Two questionnaires were administered that focused on biographical data, language background, attitudes and use. Two Swadesh lists were presented. The first included a list of 136 common, everyday words, and the second attempted to elicit specific linguistic phenomena relating to the phonology, morphosyntaxis and lexicon of Judeo-Spanish in comparison to the results of previous investigations. These interviews were transcribed and transferred to CD's that enabled the researcher to complete a more detailed analysis of the speech of these respondents in each linguistic domain. In addition to the linguistic correlates of language attrition, the extralinguistic factors of age, education, time, gender and language contact as well as the community factors of identity, attitudes and ethnicity were considered.

The results suggest that in the linguistic subsystems, the greatest attrition was attested in the morphosyntax for all speakers of this dying language. In the lexical domain, the second generation informants showed more loss and for both generations, the Judeo-Spanish phonology remained intact. The conclusions prove the necessity to consider not only the intralinguistic variables of interlanguage and language change but also to include the extralinguistic factors that play a vital role in the attrition of any moribund language.
