This study addresses (1) the identification and (2) the role of lexical fields. I apply the principle of frequency distribution to large bodies of contextually related, authentic language to identify what I term fields of use (Gebrauchsfelder). I have also formulated a means for deriving a decimal quotient that describes the average relative distance in use (Gebrauchsabstand) between the various words in a lexical field. With this quotient I am able to quantify the intensity of semantic association (Bedeutungsbeziehung) between those words.

The first chapter of the study provides historical perspective regarding developments in the perception of word meaning and the study of semantics as they relate to the lexical field theory. Chapter Two examines the origin, development, and diverse application of the lexical field theory by prominent German linguists. The third chapter of the study presents the concepts field of use and distance in use, and then employs these concepts to identify and describe the lexical field for soccer (Fussball).

In this study I explore and successfully demonstrate three distinctly different applications of the lexical field principle in areas including but not limited to the realm of semantic research. The fourth chapter proposes the possible role of fields of use as the fundamental components of universal vocabulary databases for entire languages. This is intended to increase the scope and efficiency of various computer applications for natural language processing. Chapter Five comprises the comparative examination of the word "lord" (drihten/dryhten/drohtin) as it is used in the Old English Beowulf and the Old Saxon Heliand. Here I rely solely on the decimal quotient representing distance in use (intensity of semantic association) between these words and other words in their contextual vicinity to provide insight into their respective meanings. The sixth chapter employs the field of use in combination with the principle of distance in use to ascertain the degree to which three examples of authentic text in beginning-level high school and college textbooks represent the lexical field of weather.
