The Buddhist crisis in South Vie&dotbelow;t Nam has been very controversial ever since its occurrence in 1963. Yet, few historical accounts of this period offer insights into the underlying nature of this unprecedented upheaval. Western works published since this period mainly focus on the political aspect of the crisis. Vietnamese literature which "defend" Buddhist leaders and their cause deals mainly with the religious aspect of the social unrest. Taken into consideration of these two extremities, their respective viewpoints tend to be one sided.
