Stability is an important design consideration of power electronics based systems, particularly in view of the tendency of such systems to exhibit negative impedance instability. A significant research effort in this area has focused on examining the stability properties of an equilibrium point. However, beyond the prediction of the stability properties of the equilibrium point, it is often of interest to be able to predict the region of attraction associated with that point. Recent work has set forth practical means of estimating the restricted region of attraction of those operating points applicable to systems of relatively high order. However, the problem of finding the Lyapunov function which yields an estimated restricted region of attraction that approaches the true restricted region of attraction remains. Progress towards this goal is addressed herein. In particular, this work provides a methodology for constructing Lyapunov functions for power electronics based systems. The proposed methods are applied to a variety of power electronics based system models. It is shown that the proposed methods yield estimated restricted regions of attraction that are significantly larger than those obtained using existing methods.
