Thesis (D.A.)--University of Northern Colorado, 2006.
The last fifty years have witnessed a significant increase in interest in the guitar as a performance instrument and curricular option in K-12 music education. Although there have been a small number of surveys looking at guitar course offerings in education, no research to date has focused on guitar course offerings in middle schools and high schools in Colorado. The purpose of this study is (1) to provide descriptive data on the occurrence of guitar course offerings in middle and high schools in Colorado, including the size, setting, and type of schools, education of teachers, demographic data on student enrollment, as well as the number of programs offered statewide at each school level; (2) to determine what musical styles serve as the focus of teaching in guitar courses in middle and high schools in Colorado; and (3) to determine if the basic competencies outlined in the National Standards for Music Education are being included in middle, junior high, and high school guitar programs in Colorado.

When examining the data from this study, it became apparent that guitar courses hold an important place in many of Colorado's middle schools and high schools. Of those responding to the survey, 22.4% indicated that they currently offered a guitar course in their curriculum. Additional findings show that rock/popular music holds an important place in the curricular design of guitar programs, and the National Standards for Music Education seems to be having a positive impact on guitar courses, although performance and note reading still hold the greatest emphasis.
