The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of emotion on score interpretation and the development of musical meaning. This study attempted to reconcile previous arguments on interpretation and the processes by which meaning was derived from a realized score. Chapter I examines the physiology of human emotion through a concept described as unconscious affect. Chapter II examined the music realized from the composer's score within the context of its potential for interpretation. Chapter III examined a score's system of interpretative processes within a subjective-objective continuum. Chapter IV detailed the physiology of human emotion and presented a conceptual model of unconscious affect. Examinations of various theories of expression were included. Chapter V explored various positions regarding musical meaning from within an historical framework. Evidence suggesting possible links between the perception of a score's emotional content and a conductor's own emotional considerations were examined. The neural processes involved in evaluating emotional stimuli were also considered for any compatibility within the context of unconscious affect and the potential of musical meaning. Chapter VI offered a summary and conclusions of the study's findings. Evaluations of the viewpoints presented in the study were examined for compatibility within the context of those cognitive, unconscious neural processes and the phenomenon of unconscious affect. Through an examination of the recently described conceptual model known as unconscious affect, the results indicated a far more important role than had been previously thought for the expression of human emotion as a major factor in how musical meaning could be achieved through interpretation. Although objective and intellectual score study was of obvious necessity in the primary stages of the process of interpretation, there were clear indications that the possibility for musical meaning seemed far less a result of cognitive deliberation and significantly more a result of the immediate and unconscious influences of emotional expression and affect. The full impact and understanding of unconscious affect and its relationship to musical meaning provided significant impetus for reconciling a score's potential for affective, emotional expression with that score's apparent compositional objectivity.
