Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 1984.
Both the "GO" Project (1970) and the MENC's, "Teacher Education in Music: Final Report" (1972), make recommendations advocating the use of ethnic and popular music in teacher education programs and in the public school music curriculum. The implementation of these recommendations depend heavily on a positive attitude of music educators towards the use of these musics. This research sought to: (1) develop an instrument to measure the attitudes of prospective music educators toward black popular music and its use in the classroom. (2) evaluate methods and theories of attitude change. (3) generate theory on the use of multi-operational designs as a means of interpreting and evaluating attitudes and attitude change.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The design used in this study was the non-equivalent Experimental- Control and No-Control Group design combined with a multi-operational approach that included case studies of the Experimental Group. The attitude opinionnaire (Mumford's Afro-American Popular Music Attitude Test {MAAPMAT}) was administered to all subjects and the results submitted to statistical analysis. Analyses and evaluations of other data gathered from the case studies of the Experimental subjects were included.

It was concluded that the opportunity to come into direct contact with ethnic and popular music was superior to lectures and readings in affecting positive attitudinal change. It was also concluded that in attitude study, a multi-operational approach is superior to a singular pre-test, post-test, pronounce method.
