This study investigated communication systems present in organizations that are exemplary and high performing in their category and embrace servanthood leadership principles and culture. The study utilized a hermeneutic phenomenology approach in interviewing five top leaders in these organizations and five managers or other employees not directly responsible for managing the communication system. The organizations were selected from a diverse sample of award winning organizations in sectors such as manufacturing, retail, utilities, finance, and business services. These organizations typically had received awards for high performance and servanthood culture characteristics they had created in their workplaces. Some of these award categories included creating good places to work, developing a family friendly atmosphere and emphasizing community involvement by the organization.

The findings from this study suggest that there are four themes that these leaders embrace: (1) they acknowledge and understand personal power; (2) they accept strengths and weaknesses; (3) they built trust and balance in their organizations through servanthood culture; (4) they are dedicated to communicating clearly and consistently. These four themes work in an intricate balanced relationship to create the holistic excellence that all of these organizations embrace.
