Thesis (Ph.D.)--Saint Louis University, 2007.
Current research shows that deficits in social skills are the learning cause of job loss for young adults with mental retardation. Research also shows that social skills are identified as an important aspect of curriculum for high school students with mental retardation. This study attempts to establish a link between social skills that employers identify as lacking in their employees with mental retardation and the social skills that are taught as part of high school curriculum for this group of students. Eight employers of young adults with mental retardation were interviewed regarding the social skills that they identify as present and lacking in their employees. Eleven special education teachers who teach high school students with mental retardation were interviewed regarding the social skills that they address as a part of their curricula. The results of the interviews show that employees with mental retardation are coming to work with the necessary social skills to be successful in their work environments.
