520 $a This study is an extension of Daniel Biggs' Master of Landscape Architecture (Department of Landscape Architecture, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry 2006) capstone project: "Modification of an Existing Stormwater Management Facility to Comply with Current Water Quality Requirements", which involved a proposal for the improvement of a existing storm water facility at the Wegmans Food Market in the Town of Clay, NY.
520 $a This research evaluates the sustainability of Daniel Biggs' proposed design by comparing Emergy indices for two different scenarios. One scenario was represented by the existing condition of the stormwater management facility; the second one was the proposed design by Daniel Biggs. In addition, because beauty is an aspect of sustainability and it cannot be evaluated using Emergy accounting techniquesi, a survey to assess visual preference was conducted.
520 $a The present study seeks to reveal the strengths of Emergy analyses for practitioners, planners and professionals engaged in stormwater management. In a broader sense, this study tries to reconcile differences among engineering, ecology, and landscape architecture perspectives in the area of stormwater practices.
