Thesis (M.Sc.)--University of Calgary (Canada), 2008.
One method of making an event more memorable and exciting is to engage the audience to participate more deeply in the event. For example, in advertising, companies often give sample products or prizes to engage their targeted consumers. With today's technologies, researchers are beginning to create interactive displays using human motion such as with the WiiRTM game system. There also exists interactive art using a video motion analysis system [6]. Many of the interactive video motion systems in existence cannot be applied to complex environments such as large crowds. However, due to the low cost and wide availability of video systems, motion analysis is still an attractive mechanism to provide large audiences with interactive displays. Interaction becomes even more difficult when the display is viewed by large groups of people. This thesis describes a video system to facilitate interactive displays in public spaces and with large audiences using a model-free, appearance-based approach. Our system extracts parameters that describe the field of motion seen by a camera, and then imposes structure on the scene by introducing a swarm of particles that moves in reaction to the motion field. Constraints placed on the particle movement impose further structure on the motion field. The interactive display reacts to the particles in an interesting and exciting manner. We demonstrate our system with a series of interactive displays to an audience of volunteers.
