Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2008.
Decoration was Frank Stella's last word on his work in the 1960s. In the context of his Protractor series---curvaceous, mural scale arcs of dozens of hues---the presence of the term was surprising but appropriate. Yet, a decade prior, when faced with explaining his iconic early work---the Black paintings---decoration was also, literally, Stella's first word. Stella is often understood as an instigator of postmodern decoration, but I argue that his stripes are the very emblem of modernism's decorativeness. The roots of Stella's early use of the term "decoration" are located in Clement Greenberg's writings from the 40s and 50s. For Greenberg, decoration was a generative concept, in fact, he defined modernist painting through decoration. Michael Fried's influential theory of deductive structure is also reconsidered, revealing elemental, if inadvertent, parallels to 19 th-century dogmas of decorative reform. In seeking its own essence, modernist painting must constantly negotiate decoration.
