Thesis (M.S.)--Utah State University, 2004.
The purpose of this study was to create more practical formal dress designs for high school girls using Orlando's New Design Process Model. Data were collected from previous research and observations of current dress designs to explore the problems of the dresses presently available. Further insight was gathered from questionnaires completed by a sample of 111 female college freshmen from the Northern Utah/Southern Idaho area. Design criteria were formed from the research results focusing on price, dress transformation, style, and problems faced when obtaining formalwear. Five prototypes were developed using the established criteria. The prototypes were evaluated against the criteria and by a group of teenage girls and their parents for additional insight. Although the new designs cannot solve all the problems every teenaged girl might face, it was found that they could considerably limit those problems and add alternatives to the current formalwear market for teenaged girls.
