Mail-out surveys were used to assess Nova Scotia (NS) on farm energy usage, as well as, NS farmers' interest in improving energy efficiency, adopting renewable energy options and participating in energy audits. An overall 32% (n = 224) response rate was achieved. NS farmers spent an average $1 1,228 on direct energy expenses and 78% were interested in implementing energy efficiency or renewable options. Additionally, 75% of farmers were willing to spend over $1 000 on efficiency options with a 3-5 year payback preferred. Longer payback periods were acceptable for renewable options. Cost savings, followed by grants, were most likely to influence the decision to implement. 64% of farmers were interested in energy audits. The majority would not spend > $2 50 for an audit. Audits should be conducted from January to March.
