Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2009.
Due to the technological and healthcare advantages realized during the last century, the first generation of U.S. adults with mental retardation is beginning to outlive their parent caregivers in large numbers. The social service system emphasizes that there is an impending crisis in long-term care for people with mental retardation and adding to this crisis is the fact that people with mental retardation are the least preferred client group among human service professionals and social work trainees. In this qualitative study, the researcher used focus groups to gain insight into 32 first-year human service students' perceptions of and interest in working with people with mental retardation. The findings of this study indicate that overall, human service students do not have an interest in working with individuals with mental retardation. Erroneous beliefs and negative stereotypes about individuals with mental retardation influence participants' interest in working with this client group. The researcher discusses implications for human service education and recommendations for future research.
