The purpose of this study was to capture the sensemaking processes of community college students who were required to enroll in remedial coursework, and explore how these students understood and articulated their academic and career aspirations while being deemed academically deficient by institutional standards of proficiency. Understanding how students within this segment of higher education perceived their place in the world and created meaning for themselves, both academically and socially, serves to provide a clearer picture of academic performance and persistence to the baccalaureate. Ten students and one program administrator were interviewed over the course of a semester for this case study. Four major themes arose from the collected data and subsequent interpretations: remediation as "do-over"; the arbitrary nature of testing and remedial policies; misalignment of K-12 and postsecondary institutions; and inadequate student resources and support. Implications for policy and practice include: increased teacher evaluation in K-12 institutions to guard against indifferent instruction behaviors that lead to low expectations of students; devising better strategies to provide college counseling to lower socioeconomic students; required first-year student introductory courses to promote college skills-building and integrate students into the college community; precise and in-depth academic counseling for community college students; and better resource investment for two-year colleges in public university systems.
