Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 2004.
This study describes and compares explicit and implicit moral meanings of justice in both Korean and United States social studies textbooks using a content analysis method. To make a just society, U.S. textbooks which inherited the Enlightenment tradition begin with the emphasis on just social systems which protect individuals' freedom and equality, whereas Korean textbooks which adhere to Confucianism and stress individual virtues as the basis for establishing just social systems. Enlightenment advocates are convinced that social systems can be established with the help of human rationality, while Confucians believe individual virtues can be cultivated through developing human moral feelings. As one objective of moral education, the meaning of justice embraces not only the connection between the public and the private, but also the mutual relationships between human rationality and human moral feelings.
