Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Catholic University of America, 1997.
The Bible has always held a prominent place in catechesis, but the goals of biblical catechesis are not clearly defined. In 1990 the United States Catholic bishops asked that catechetical texts explain Scripture according to the mind of the Church while not neglecting the contributions of biblical scholarship. Two documents, the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC, 1992) and the Pontifical Biblical Commission's The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church (PBC, 1993) again raise questions among Catholics about biblical catechesis. This dissertation analyzes the goals and tasks of biblical catechesis in selected United States catechetical texts in light of the guidelines contained in these documents.

Part One describes the development of biblical catechesis in elementary texts from 1784 through the 1990s. In the nineteenth century a two-track system developed: catechisms used the Bible to support church teaching and to refute Protestant tenets. Bible histories, on the other hand, paraphrased scriptural accounts and taught moral lessons. Neither genre encouraged reading the Bible itself.

Catholic attitudes toward the Bible changed dramatically in the twentieth century. A series of church documents, including the encyclicals Providentissimus Deus (1893) and Divino Afflante Spiritu (1943), and the dogmatic constitution Dei Verbum of Vatican II (1965), encouraged Catholics both to read the Bible and profit from the methods of modern biblical scholarship. Consequently, modern textbooks integrating Bible, doctrine, and liturgy replaced nineteenth-century catechisms and bible histories.

Part Two of the dissertation analyzes six catechetical textbook series published in the United States between 1985 and 1992. It examines their use of the Bible to: (1) determine the extent the texts embody the spirit and follow the directives of the CCC and the PBC; (2) identify tasks of biblical catechesis as understood by the authors/editors of these texts. With one exception the texts embody the spirit of the directives, and for most the tasks of catechesis include laying the foundations for biblical literacy; presenting the Bible as the book of the Church; fostering an awareness and appreciation for God's saving plan; celebrating God's saving actions in the liturgy, especially the Eucharist; and engendering a fruitful reading of Scripture.
