Recent revisions of some popular texts include more discipline-based content. Results of the study indicate that continued changes in textbook content are necessary to meet the requirements of more discipline-based art teacher preparation.

Results of Phase I of the study indicated that art education textbooks have gradually incorporated content and skills from the four domains of DBAE in the period from 1929-1985.

Results of Phase II of the study indicated that currently available elementary curriculum materials have thoroughly integrated content from the four domains.

The purposes of this study were: Phase I--to identify antecedents of DBAE in historical art education texts; Phase II--to analyze current art curriculum materials for elementary education; Phase III--to identify the most commonly used elementary art teacher preparation textbooks, and to determine the status of each of the four domains of the discipline-based orientation in the texts identified. The study includes an overview of the emergence of DBAE and its influence on art education and art teacher preparation texts, a historical review of art teacher preparation texts, and a review of previous content analyses of art teacher preparation texts.

The primary purpose of the study, a content analysis of the most frequently used art teacher preparation texts, was accomplished using a researcher-developed instrument designed to identify content from the aesthetic, art criticism, art history, and studio production domains.

Results of Phase III of the study indicated that the most frequently used texts for elementary teacher preparation, both in general education and art specialist programs, continue to be dominated by studio-based activities. Results indicated significant differences in the content of the texts most frequently used and the texts recommended by proponents of DBAE. Art history continues to be the least represented of the four domains in art teacher preparation texts. Although most instructors indicated satisfaction with available texts, results indicated no significant correlations between stated course content and the content of the textbook selected in the aesthetic and art criticism domains, and a low correlation in the art history domain.
