This study examined the management and leadership practices, and artistic attributes needed for university dance administrators to determine the perceived needs of dance administrators based on the organizational frames developed by Bolman and Deal (1984). A mixed method approach was used to collect, analyze and interpret the data. The survey instrument and the focus group/interview questions used the Reframing Leadership theory developed by Bolman and Deal (1984) as a lens through which to view dance administrators' perceptions of management and leadership practices. This theoretical framework looks at leadership practices through four frames: the structural; the human resource; the political; and the symbolic frames.

The top 10 administrative skills rated as "very important" by university dance administrators included interpersonal skills, listening skills, expertise in arts discipline, enthusiasm, communication, creative thinking, living by example, developing trust, self confidence, and public/press relations. From the 28 skills rated "very important," the symbolic frame skills had more representation, followed by the human resource frame, political frame skills, and structural frame.

University dance administrators were asked for the artistic skills that are pertinent and transferable to administration. The participants expressed a wide array of transferable artistic skills. Seven themes emerged from the data. The creative process was referenced the most, followed by people skills, organizational skills, perseverance, vision, survival, and humor.

University dance administrators perceive themselves to be both effective leaders and managers. The human resources frame was significantly the dominant leadership behavior and leadership style of the survey participants. The symbolic frame was the second most dominant frame and was significantly used more than the structural and political frames. However, the symbolic frame was the dominant frame followed by the human resource, political, and structural frames as expressed by the focus group members and those interviewed. In addition, 58% of the dance administrators in this study were multi-frame leaders, 33% were dual-frame leaders, and 9% were single-frame leaders.
