Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2007.
This research study examined the inter-correlations between psychological and physiological factors and the impact they exerted on quarterback performance. It was hypothesized that the interaction of visual processing speed, attentional flexibility, visual memory, and anxiety/stress tolerance would exert a powerful influence on the effectiveness of quarterback performance. These psychological factors when integrated with physiological correlates such as foot-speed, accuracy, visual acuity, arm strength, height and weight, were analyzed and placed in a series of regression analyses that predicted the percentage of pass completions, interception rates and win percentage among these athletes. This research proposal detailed a systematic and standardized method of assessing quarterback potentials in an effort to improve upon current methods of quarterback talent evaluations. In addition, the impact that anxiety/stress tolerance exerted on performance and the correlation between decrements in visual processing speed on generalized anxiety among these athletes was also examined.
