Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Texas at San Antonio, 2008.
This thesis is intended to further the current research on coach/athlete relationships by investigating this dynamic in a professional sports setting. The current research in this field has investigated many levels of sports, but very little research has dealt with professional athletes. Past researchers have looked at areas such as immediacy within the coach/athlete dyad and team immediacy levels, preferences of coaching styles by both athletes and coaches, aggressive versus assertive leadership behaviors, and how efficacy can influence the success, failure, and enjoyment of athletes, their coaches, and the team as a whole. While most researchers have stopped at the college level, this thesis took one step further and investigated how these items influence the coach/athlete dynamic in professional sports.

Through the use of interviews with both professional athletes and their coaches, comparisons were made to the findings of past research of the items mentioned above. Though the participant numbers were small and the findings few, the thesis provides an excellent stepping stone to future research in this area. Findings included a greater seeking of efficacy building versus immediacy building behavior on behalf of the coach by the athlete. The reason for this behavior by the athletes interviewed is unknown at this time, and could not be determined from the information gathered in this study.
