This study was conducted in order to explore teachers and school staff members' understanding of the factors that contribute to childhood obesity and to learn about their attitudes toward the school's role in obesity prevention. Respondents were asked to complete questionnaires, which measured basic knowledge about risk factors and prevention strategies and they were asked about their agreement with the school's increased role in preventing obesity. Furthermore, they were asked to generate ideas about barriers and solutions to addressing the problem.

The results indicated that school staff members possess adequate knowledge. There is less agreement about taking playing a primary role in prevention. Responses demonstrated attitudes that parents are both the barrier, as well as the solution to the problem. Staff members expressed a need for education and involvement of families and parents toward prevention efforts. These findings provide a direction for prevention to move toward community outreach efforts.
