Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2008.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine El Teatro Campesino's use of Indigenous philosophy and culture in its theatrical works, ritual dances, and publications, as well as its influence on Chicana/o Movement ideology. Special attention is given to analysis of El Teatro Campesino's coalescence of ideas regarding Chicana/o Indigeneity and Chicana/o Movement strategies to attain equal human and civil rights for Chicanas and Chicanos in the United States. During the 1970s, El Teatro Campesino was a leader in progressing and evolving Indigenism among Chicanas and Chicanos, and its work to represent Chicana/o Indigenous heritage continues to leave a mark on Chicana/o cultural identity today. Consequently, this study contributes to the understudied implications of Chicana/o Indigenous heritage on understandings of Chicana/o history and culture.
