The body is rarely viewed and utilized as an integral part of the psychotherapy experience, even in cases of physical/sexual abuse trauma when the body is the site of the harm. Dance/movement therapy (DMT) understands the body as a resource and vehicle that gives form to unconscious processes which contribute to psychological issues. The effects of trauma on psyche and soma and the relational context of abuse experiences have complex implications regarding the survivor's capacity to create and maintain healthy intimate relationships in adulthood. This calls attention to the use of the body to give form to unexpressed needs, emotions, and un-integrated traumatic memories that contribute to underlying relational dynamics of couples in which one or both partners has a trauma history. Working with the body can let partners engage their full self in the relationship, foster nonverbal empathic sensitivity, and allow for a more intimate connection to self and other.

520 $a The purpose of this project is to provide an in-depth theoretical review of the literature to build toward an integrated theoretical framework and model of therapy for working with single-trauma couples that uses DMT. Chapter 1 introduces the topic and outlines the direction of subsequent chapters. Chapter 2 critically reviews the DMT literature and its use in the healing of trauma, and chapter 3 examines the impact of trauma on the body and psyche of individuals and couples. Chapter 4 provides a focused exploration of attachment literature regarding the effects of early relational trauma on right brain development and dyadic, body-based regulation processes. Chapter 5 reviews existing couples therapy approaches for working with trauma. Finally, chapter 6 presents a synthesis of the material and proposes an integrated theoretical framework and phase-oriented model that describes how psychotherapists working with single-trauma couples can use dance and movement to enhance therapeutic treatment.
