Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2008.
The purpose of this project was to create a curriculum that increases the spiritual and religious cultural competency of social workers and other practitioners in the field of mental health. To accomplish this goal, the training modules of the curriculum address the following topics: self-examination of biases towards various religious traditions; basic facts about four religious traditions in the United States; and spiritual and religious assessment techniques and interventions. These interventions include cognitive therapies to promote salutary thought substitutions and guided imagery techniques to explore and enhance spiritual relationships. The literature reviewed for this project suggests that religion has a dual nature: it is both a resource that promotes health and a potential cause of psychological conflict. This curriculum can be used to instruct mental health practitioners to work with religious and spiritual strengths and conflicts in therapy.
