School nursing is a century old tradition of helping to ensure the containment of communicable disease, uphold state standards on immunization compliance and, in general, being responsible for the physical, emotional and psychological care of all students in the school. Examination of the contemporary school nurse role against these traditions is the focus of this study. The analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data collected for this study indicated that the nurse is primarily in the health office attending to the needs of the students, although, at times, the nurse is utilized in functions that are not health office related. The research gathered her shows that the role of the contemporary school nurse has room to be streamlined more towards the issues that surround the health of the student.
